Winter Preparation

Nov. 7, 2016, 9:30 p.m.

As the sun is setting on our summer heat, it is now time to consider things you can do to prepare for winter time.
Landscape Systems
With the summer heat fading quickly, many of the drip systems can be scaled back to accommodate the cooler days and nights.
if you have planted a winter lawn, once it is established, it too can can have the watering times reduced.
Now that the days are getting shorter, those that have landscape lighting on a timer may want to adjust the start and end times.
Fireplaces and Smoke Detectors
Once you have stocked the firewood awaiting a crisp evening on a no-burn day, do not forget the check your flu for any obstructions or possible cleaning. The damper should also be fully functional as well.
Given that smoke detectors have a limited life-span (~8-10 years), this may be a good time to consider newer smokies. If you haven't checked your batteries, or replaced them, this is the time to get your detectors in optimum condition.
Christmas Lighting
Putting up Christmas decorations is just weeks, if not days away. Now is a great time to begin digging out the boxes of lighting and ornaments to ensure they all work properly. Check all cords to ensure there are no frays or lightbubs that may have burned out. LED lighting is a great way to ensure you have longer lasting lights as well as reduced energy consumption.
Fans
Winter time doesn't mean you have to turn those ceiling fans off. Simply run them in reverse to allow the air flow from the fan to go upwards. An easy way to determine if your fan is in winter mode is to see which way it is turning. A clockwise turning blade normally means the air is going up. A counter-clockwise turning blade normally means the fan is blowing air down.
